Gafr Wen - 2024

White

"Gafr Wen" (pronounced Gavr Wen) Is one of our 3rd year vintages made from a single varietal of our Orion grape variety. The namesake of this vintage comes from the chorus of the Welsh folk song "Cyfri'r Geifr" which translates to "Counting the Goats" and also the origin of our name Tair Gafr Wines.

2024 was a wet and windy year for all Welsh vineyards, althrough there was a large number of inflorescences, poor weather conditions in the spring resulted in poor fruit set reducing the overall yield. The wet weather continued throughout out the Summer and early Autumn delaying ripening and harvest until the end of October. We were unable to harvest any of our regent grapes in 2024 as they did not achieve an appropriate level of ripeness.

Gafr Wen is our first direct press wine. The whole bunches were added to the press and the juice removed without any skin contact. The Juice was transfered to a stainless steel container where native yeasts living on the grapes were allowed to ferment the sugars with no additions. The wine was then transferred to a 2nd Chardonay barrel for maturing and malolactic fermentation. The wine was then gravity cleared with no addition of finings before racking and bottling.

Gafr Wen is a balanced and crisp white that strikes the balance between dry and sweet perfectly. A young wine that will only gain complexity with age, elements of gooseberries and lemon balm offer a pleasing tartness and depth. Able to it will hold its own against spiced foods without detracting from more delicate aromatics such as thai basil and star annise. This light-medium, straw yellow white has notes of lemon and asparagus with complex base notes of peppercorn on the nose that can cut through the rich, umami saltiness of the robust flavours of a charcuterie board,  canapes and or a pate. A perfect party wine for late winter evenings with good company and better food.
